From Musk till Dawn A New Zealand-y Date Spot in Nolita
Things you know about New Zealand:
—It’s got more sheep than people.
—Lord of the Rings.
—The people are called Kiwis.
—And it’s responsible for your dinner tonight...
Specifically, the New Zealander at The Musket Room, which is just what you’d like to imagine a large, rustic, brick-and-wood dining room in New Zealand to be, opening tonight in Nolita.
Your chef here hails from NZ. And on his way here, he also did some fine work at Public and Saxon + Parole, where it appears he ruminated on the art of the flawless date spot. Hence: this place. You’ve got candlelit nooks with blue leather banquettes, garden views, walls of wine and... delicate plates of whole quail.
The power move here is the nook. Some people might try to sell you on the back dining room with all its sunniness and herb garden adjacency. (Those edible flowers with your scallops: they’re from there.) And... well, sure, that does sound pretty great. But go with the nook.
The nook’s just past that walnut-tree bar you passed on the way in. Just six cozy two-tops where you’ll get to know a fetching fellow human being over fried bone marrow with citrus and uni, bottles of sauvignon blanc and venison flavored with gin.
Note: it’s also okay not to pass the bar

May 21, 2013 On Your Mark Waterfront Burgers and Beer at the Seaport
Technology being what it is, there’s a good chance you’re outside enjoying this glory right now.
But you could always be a little more outdoors...er.
Somewhere with beer and wood planks, perhaps...
Like Watermark Bar, a sunny patch of pier where burgers and beer and being outside are the law of the land, opening tomorrow at South Street Seaport.
This was supposed to happen back in November, but... Sandy. The silver lining: back then, you wouldn’t have been able to take advantage of the tens of thousands of square feet of Brooklyn Bridge–adjacent outdoor picnic deck where alcoholized snow cones, LaFrieda beef and margaritas remind you of the true meaning of summer.
You’re coming to Pier 15 with a group of be-sunglassed compadres. And you’ll all just gaze out at the bridge and the river and the deck chairs at the end of the pier. Then you’re going to cartwheel all the way there (walking: also acceptable). The last building you reach will be the place—essentially a glass house filled with nothing but a black-tile-and-brown-wood bar, a few lanterns and red industrial stools.
Which is all well and good, but you’re just going in there to pick up provisions and take them out to the deck, beyond the bar. Or, if you look closely, there’s a smaller deck with a patch of grass on the roof.
Summer’s the best.

Okay, let’s talk about that, then...
Welcome to Hill & Dale, an old-school-parlor-looking LES gastropub that throws you back to the days of analog entertainment. It’s now open.
This is from the guys who brought you the Brooklyneer. Just picture a time when incredibly handsome microphones and on-air signs and extremely plush couches and fireplaces were a part of everyone’s daily existence, and you’ve got this place. So long as you toss some rye-Carpano-Antica-Ramazzotti-
You’re coming here for end-of-week drinks and maybe some grilled wild-boar sausage amongst friends. (Nothing brings friends together like boar.) You’ll all want to breeze past the initial set of booths at the entrance—the ones surrounded by old record-making supplies. When you reach more booths and some accordion overhead lamps, breeze again.
Just keep moving until you’ve cleared the bar and its many musical accoutrements, and found yourself in a chandeliered living room. You’ll know it by its tufted sofas, the fireplace and its general living-room-ness. It’s here where you’ll take your coconut-rum cocktails and oysters Rockefeller.
Assuming you enjoy the sensation of being insanely comfortable...
